In the spring of 1776, North Carolina’s Fourth Provincial Congress met in Halifax and unanimously adopted what became known as the Halifax Resolves.


This bold declaration authorized North Carolina’s delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for independence—making it the first official action by any colony to support separation from Great Britain.
