Explore the History of Hope

Welcome to Historic Hope, the beautifully restored residence of former North Carolina Governor David Stone (1770-1818). Located just four miles west of Windsor, NC, this complex provides a distinctive look into the rural life of the late 18th and 19th centuries in eastern North Carolina and the South.

Today, the Historic Hope Foundation oversees and manages 45 acres of the original 1,051-acre property once owned by the Stone family. The mission of the Historic Hope Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization, is to offer educational, cultural, and recreational advantages to the public through the preservation, maintenance, and administration of Historic Hope Plantation. This serves as a vital component of the heritage of the Roanoke-Chowan Region and exemplifies agrarian life in Eastern North Carolina from 1760 to 1840.

Relocating four miles from its original location, the 1763 King-Bazemore house now stands in Hope. It is one of just two gambrel-roofed homes in North Carolina featuring brick end walls. Both the King-Bazemore house and the Hope mansion exemplify the enduring agrarian culture that flourished in northeastern North Carolina during the Colonial and Federal eras.

Historical Archaeology

Archaeological investigations, conducted by Coastal Carolina Research and overseen by Andrew Madsen from the Program for Archaeological Research at the University of Kentucky, were carried out in 2001 and 2002. These studies focused on the preliminary efforts to comprehend the lifestyles of the enslaved African Americans at Hope Plantation during the colonial and early Federal periods.
